CHARACTER

Name: Naberius Tern
Canon: The Locked Tomb Series
Canon point: His death in Gideon the Ninth
Age: 23

Summary: Prince Naberius Tern is the cavalier primary of the Crown Princess Coronabeth Tridentarius and Princess Ianthe Tridentarius, twin necromancers he is sworn to serve with his life, acting as bodyguard, servant, companion, and occasional snack for them both. He was born to the last cavalier primary of the Third House and raised from birth to the role, swearing his oath of service to the princesses when he was fourteen and they were twelve, from which point it was all more or less downhill. Coronabeth and Ianthe made Naberius a party to their intensely troubled sibling dynamic, which is undergirded by Coronabeth’s secret - the prettier, more charismatic twin and crown princess is not a necromancer, and her sister Ianthe has to work twice as hard to act as necromancer for the pair of them to protect this secret, which would cost Coronabeth her rank and social standing if discovered. Naberius was made an unhappy party to this secret as well, but protects it as fervently as Ianthe does, training Coronabeth in secret as a cavalier to keep her happy while treating her in all other ways as his necromancer, and his preferred necromancer at that, a deeply lopsided devotion she does not return in kind.

In terms of personality, Naberius (Babs, to Coronabeth), is like an unfortunate collision between a snappy purse dog and an Instagram fitness influencer best known for the callout posts about their lousy behaviour and low quality hair gel endorsements. He is arrogant, prickly, sarcastic, paranoid, prone to conspiracy theories, condescending, overly fond of lip gloss, vain, a sore loser, whiny, and all around ten pounds of unpleasantness shoved into a five pound bag - but much of this is a product of the terrible conditions he has to work under. Necromancers of the Third House literally bite chunks out of their cavaliers to fuel their magic on occasion, and Naberius is so used to this that he doesn’t blink an eye at getting chunks of himself bitten out. He is constantly on the defensive because of having to navigate being a proxy, scapegoat, and buffer between the Tridentarii twins to boot, and paranoid and conspiratorial from protecting their secret from outsiders. In no way does it make up for his many deficiencies of character, but at the very least, there are reasons that Naberius is the way he is - and the possibility he could stop being so much that way in a new context.

Powers/abilities: Naberius is an exceptional duelist, reaching the top five in the listings by the age of twenty three. His primary weapon, as with all cavaliers, is the rapier, and his off-hand is a spring-loaded three bladed knife. He has a high pain tolerance, and is otherwise a healthy, very fit young human.

Inventory: His rapier, with silver hilt; his trident knife; a well-tailored outfit.

OTHER

Sentimental item: A thick golden ring set with a purple sapphire flanked by amethysts, engraved with the initials B.B. on the inside of the band back to back to look like a butterfly unless you know what you’re looking at. This ring was a gift Naberius gave to Coronabeth in a fit of solidarity after he began teaching her to fight in secret, the two Bs back to back (Coronabeth and Naberius), meant to represent them united in keeping her secret safe as two cavaliers against the world. He won’t remember who it belongs to, but he knows, somehow, that it’s desperately important to him.
Gemstone: Primary color lavender, secondary color pale blue. It is a trillion cut gemstone whose secondary color is only visible at certain angles under the light, despite being highly polished and well-cut. It is chipped and abraded on one side.

Lost memory #1: Coronabeth Tridentarius. Naberius will lose his memories of Coronabeth Tridentarius having ever existed, meaning he will remember himself as the cavalier primary to the sole heir, Ianthe. The loss of memories of Coronabeth will make Naberius more lonely and unhappy, because his respite from Ianthe (who is, let’s say, a fun time) was always his service to Coronabeth (who is also a fun time, but in a different, also bad way). Without her, Naberius will be more open to serving others, seeking to fill a void he can’t quite place but will consistently feel.
Lost memory #2: Naberius's own death. He was stabbed from behind with his own rapier in the process of Ianthe Tridentarius' ascension to the necromantic state of Lyctorhood, wherein his soul was consumed by her in the Lyctoral process to serve as an undying source of power. Lacking this memory will lead Naberius to believe he was attacked by an unknown third party, supporting his paranoid ideas about the so-called conspiracy of Canaan House. He will be more concerned about personal attacks on his well-being as a result.
Altered memory: Naberius believes Ianthe Tridentarius is the Crown Princess of Ida. In canon, this title is held by her sister, Coronabeth, but Naberius will now remember Ianthe as being the sole heir to her parents' station, with the attendant privileges of rank that go with it. As a result, Naberius will have a more deferential and protective attitude towards Ianthe, along with a colder, more repressed attitude towards everything else.
