Yes, I am. But there is nothing I can do but wait for his return.
[ Is he supposed to be wailing and crying? /gestures at Crow's ghost somewhere out there having tea parties with the idols, he's clearly doing just fine ]
Much of life's anxieties can be calmed by simply having faith that things will turn out alright. ...that is something he used to say.
no subject
Is that to say you're content to submit yourself to fate?
[It seemed like Crow was, anyway. Some people appeared to oppose that mindset, and then others... like Lark, seemed to accept it.]
Death has such a strange impermanence here that we are still struggling to adapt to, and it leaves us confused over what there really is to fear instead. Your calmness makes it seem as though you've seen this a thousand times over... and perhaps you have. Has Crow died before? Have these ghosts roamed around before, too? It's all such... unfamiliar territory.
no subject
He looks at HiMERU in silence for a moment, confused about his confusion. ]
...I have seen it happen before. [ and then, quieter yet: ] But that does not lessen the fear.
[ he still fears it. how could he not, such a fear to deeply ingrained in any species ever to exist ]
no subject
The ghosts? Or... [There's only one "or." Crow...]
What— What happened that time before, then?
[It's rude to ask. He and the others have already pushed Lark at least once before. There's no enjoyment in making the poor man writhe in discomfort, but if he's holding answers that could help them...]
Please. If there's any precedent for this, whatever you can tell us... It could be useful for us to know. At the very least, to give us that "faith" you spoke of.
no subject
Many have died and returned... The miracle performed is thanks to old man Crow. He is our savior.
[ allegedly. But he had heard this directly from Crow, and therein lies his "faith" ]
no subject
HiMERU lifts an eyebrow.]
How is Crow related to the revivals?
no subject
"Related"...? He is the cause. The source. He wields the power of the gods, to protect and provide for all within the town.
[ If Crow ever tries to tell anyone he's just a normal guy, that's bullshit, according to Lark ]
no subject
What? [He wanted to formulate a better response, but no, really, what]
Then... Is he a god? Or is he simply borrowing their power? How does that even happen?
no subject
[ To any of that. Does he look like he knows? he'd probably hero worship Crow regardless of whether he's a god or a mortal man. ]
Does it matter?
no subject
Of course it matters. If he's the one responsible for this strange corruption of life and death as we once knew it, does that mean he's also the one who brought us all here?
Could he send us back, as well?
no subject
[ please, he's just taking things at face value here, ]
I believe that if you truly wish to return... to forget none of this ever happened... he would do his utmost to support that wish. ...There is nothing for me to return to, so I had never asked.
no subject
Does he? At first, that wasn't even a question. But lately... He surely can't be the only one here who's gained something irreplaceable in this helltown. He can't be the only one who, despite all odds, has an easier time breathing here than he ever had back home.
He may not be the most extreme of cases. At least he had a place to return to, if he ever could — unlike, say, a world in complete apocalyptic ruin. But there are things here that are more precious, more giving than what he'd had on the other side, and...
...
Well, even Lark had a sister.]
Do you remember it well? Your life before here. Are there... gaps, in your memory?
no subject
[ It was tolerable, back then, until he lost his sister and found himself alone. HiMERU, therefore, is enviable ]
I would not return. Life here is easier. Better.
no subject
[Just to name a few recent events...]
Even in this place so fraught with danger and rife with terrors, you will still call it better? Just what kind of world did you come from...?
[He can't say he doesn't agree, though.]
no subject
[ You do not go outside at night. You stay indoors when strange noises sound. It is better and livable when you have an ounce of common sense and that of self preservation. ]
no subject
But so much has changed — his circumstances, his motivations, even his sense of self, and which "self" is worth preserving.]
Before all of this... Perhaps not. But if there were something in the water precious enough to brave the teeth for, the rewards would outweigh the consequences.
[He should feel fortunate to have gotten away with only a bite.]
Even you must have, or have had, something you would risk it all for.
no subject
[ Maybe if his sister were still with him, he'd care a lot more. But ever since her death, it feels as if he'd only been half living, against his will. ]
...you do not need me telling you this, but keep your brother close.
