mr postman i have a conspiracy theory for you
Can you track people by their gems?
[Please Lark, his bird magnet theory hinges on this.]
hm
I have never tried. Why do you ask?
no subject
Can you try? I wish to confirm a theory.
[He won't be able to explain this theory because part of it is propped up by something Sothis told him long ago about migratory birds and Byleth doesn't know what a magnetic field is, but still. He wants to confirm it.]
no subject
[ Hide and seek... he knows this game, he's played it with his sister long ago ]
no subject
[With that Byleth about turned and... sprinted off pretty damn fast, wow look at that guy go (this is why he's a menace in Three Hopes). Off he went, into the Nest proper... and towards the train station, where he slowed his pace to less insanely fast, and went onto the train itself.
He picked a random carriage and sat down on the floor, out of sight of anyone peeking in the windows and... waited.]
no subject
The town. The train station. Whispers in the breeze, the scent of apple in the air...
It takes a while-- Byleth may have to remain hidden for upwards of fifteen minutes, but if he's still inside the train by then, Lark's feet then appear in front of him. ]
Byleth Eisner.
[ Hello ]
no subject
Lark. You found me.
[Byleth stood up from where he had been sitting, shaking out his cloak of any lingering dust or wood chips from where he'd been sitting on it.]
What was the method you used? Simple tracking? Or were you pulled by my gem?
[Inquiring minds want to know!]
no subject
[ As he said: it is his job. He was meant for this, like pigeons who can find their way home no matter how displaced they are ]
no subject
You 'felt' for me...
[Byleth cupped his chin, intrigued.]
...how do I 'feel'? Can you put into words?
[As he asked that, he fished out his gem, as if preparing to compare Lark's description to his own gem and draw comparisons. Either way, it seemed that Lark was drawn to something in each individual.]
no subject
[ He can, maybe, if he really puts his mind to it, but that's difficult even with the simplest questions. It feels like... feels like... ... He glances down at Byleth's hand, fingers wrapped around the gem. ]
...You feel... peculiar. It is easier for me, the more familiar I am with a person.
no subject
I see. So, we'll need to grow closer for you to better discern my soul. I understand. In which case, our next course of action is clear: we should try to become friends.
[Yeah.]
no subject
Not necessary. I will get to know you as I complete more deliveries.
[ also who said anything about a soul ]
...Do you wish to be found? There is a much simpler way, for both you and for me.
no subject
No. I don't want to be found. I merely wished to know how it is you found us for your deliveries. The sole thing everyone has in common is their gem. Otherwise, what it is you're locking onto? Our souls? Or...
[Well, it's not a bird thing but:]
...our scent?
[Maybe 'Lark' was to throw them off. Maybe he's a wolfskin...]
no subject
[ Maybe it's something like scent, he doesn't know. That man Phil can do something of the same thing, can't he? and nobody pesters him about it. ]
Perhaps you would gain a sense for it if you were to become a postman.
no subject
[Wait.
Lark, you're a brilliant man. Of course, if I wish to learn this unique skill of yours, I must immerse myself in the role which honed it. Will you allow me to become a postman of the Nest as well?
no subject
[ this one is taken ]
no subject
[....he's pouting.
..........he's definitely pouting.]
no subject
looks away. if he doesn't see it, it doesn't exist ]
I am sure. It is my job. ...Old man Crow, he was the one who appointed me the position. I must prove to him I am capable.
no subject
[Byleth can sort of understand that. You don't want to disappoint someone who placed that much faith in you. Byleth's pout eased fractionally.]
.........very well. I understand... but, if you ever find yourself in need of assistance, I'll be more than happy to ease your burden. If you need it...
no subject
[ But- he remembers a conversation with Leona, about how Lark is supposed to deliver a delivery to himself ]
Actually... If there is ever a delivery meant for me, may I entrust you to it?
[ it will never happen, but it's like being on call ]
no subject
It was like watching a dog perk up, wagging tail and all. Though Byleth's expression barely changed, he was clearly happy...]
Yes. I promise that I will carry out any deliveries addressed to you impeccably. You can count on me.
no subject
[ He'll probably only need one day to do that, though, like the Lark stalking team who watched him wander around like an animatronic on a set path. ]
no subject
[Byleth settled a hand over his unbeating heart and bowed shallowly.]
Now then, I feel that I've occupied your time long enough. Goodbye, Lark. May the next time we meet be when I have a delivery for you.
