NPC CONTACT

CROW

Occupation: unofficial leader of The Nest
Age: late 40s
Gemstone: "a pure black gemstone, highly polished and slightly tapered towards one end not unlike an egg" (first mentioned here)
Description: Crow has sandy blond hair and dark brown eyes, and can typically be found at home or around the train station. Reportedly, he holds a lot of influence over the town, and is a good person to talk to when troubled. While many npcs have been losing memories, Crow reportedly has not. He is the one who gave named npcs their bird names, as well as the one who named the town The Nest.

SWAN

Occupation: ferryman
Age: mid 30s
Description: Swan has dark brown hair and dark green eyes, and can typically be seen out in the water on a boat during good weather, or couch hopping during bad weather and at nights. Six silver coins are used as a passage fee and conduit for her to take a person across the water; according to Lark, those who leave with her never return.

ROBIN

Occupation: rail attendant
Age: early 30s
Gemstone: "fragile light blue shards encased in clear gem" (first mentioned here)
Description: Robin has black hair and light brown eyes, and can typically be found around the train station or cafes in town. She was married to Jay, the train conductor who was murdered early in the game, and has picked up enough from him to operate the train if we ever get it working again. While she has lost a considerable amount of her memories, she claims to be content living in the present. An unknown individual stole her uniform and faked her death via the train's furnace at the start of the game.

LARK

Occupation: postman
Age: mid 20s
Description: Lark has ashy hair and golden eyes, and can typically be seen around town with his mail bag doing deliveries, or hanging out in the graveyard talking to the dead underground. As a postman, Lark prides himself in knowing people and places, but has trouble speaking and reportedly cannot read aside from names he's learned to recognize. It is not widely known, but Lark is able to speak with and, to a certain extent, control the dead.

RAVEN (née HAMTARO)

Age: pre teen
Gemstone: "completely clear, like a diamond, aside from a tiny red spot in the center: a gemstone trapped within a gemstone" (first mentioned here)
Description: Raven has black hair and grey eyes, and can occasionally be seen wandering around town but is most reliably found at Poppy Hall after dark. Following the "sacrifice" of several characters, he awoke without any memories of his identity or past life, and was given the temporary name Hamtaro before learning his true name. His family is dead, and according to the note he had written on the back of a photograph discovered in a burning house, he had sworn to bring them back no matter what the cost. According to the townspeople npcs, according to Crow, a boy named Raven died in a house fire many years ago.

MAGPIE

Age: early teens
Gemstone: "blue and yellow, splotched like flowers run through a photoshop distort filter" (first mentioned here)
Description: Princess Stephanie Astrapia (aka Paradise Magpie, aka Magpie, aka Maggie) has sandy blond hair and golden eyes. While not related by blood, Crow and Maggie consider themselves father and daughter. An unknown individual has been using her name and reputation to communicate with the characters, and has stolen six silver coins.

SPARROW

Age: mid teens
Gemstone: "like a fire opal: bright yellow and red that dance like flames when turned" (first mentioned here)
Description: Sparrow has black hair and bright blue eyes, and is difficult to get ahold of; the most reliable way to meet her is to wait for her to come home, which she does some nights. She has an interest in the supernatural and the occult, and reportedly is the person who gave other npcs their gemstones. She is Maggie's best/only friend at the start of the game.

[ talking to Lark a ways back had made him, despite himself, feel terrifically yearning for a "Farewell, Gaia" tour, in a somewhat more positive version of why he really really wanted to sweep all of existence off the table, twice. he imagines what that would look like. getting home, letting her go like he'd raised her into a butterfly, then getting ready to take his final bows with a little grace, for once.

...
he also thinks of being ardently told by the little boy he'd created that there are people in this world that love him.

fuuuuck that, Kuja wants to live. ]

No.
As far as I've planned, I won't be going home unless something very dramatic changes for me. It would be nice, if I could guide her soul back home, but if I have to hand deliver it and be stuck there afterwards, it's not happening.

I suppose, for me, it would be ideal if she could simply be put into stasis in something I could arrange to be guarded. I've seen it done, but I don't have the time or half the materials I'd need to set it up. Hence my cry for aid.

[ if you call queen brahne raza alexandros xvi his friend to his face sparrow he is going to wretch ]

Now that's what I like to hear. If you were agreeing to this pro bono, I would be concerned.

I have only hearsay of your interests as to gauge what you might prize most highly, so forgive me if this turns into a bit of a long haggle. The main thing I have to offer are my own skills as a magician.

[ oh, wait. ]

I do have my lab, of course, but I don't know how much use you'd get from, say, an incomplete engine, some lengths of
[ this is a very generous word for it ] cable that can conduct magical energy, or cultured organs.
finalbows: (his voice in my ear)

It's called delayed gratification sparrow!!!

[personal profile] finalbows 2023-03-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
[ so we're interested in the magical engine...?

Kuja hadn't had any explicit plans when he started growing the various parts for it (the carburetor he'd stabbed when Ala came back, for the record, had miraculously survived). But it was a good start for anything terrifically complex he might have need of later; a necessary building block for the real fun stuff.

As any jaunt into youtube can tell you, one's imagination is the only limit when it came to deranged things you can hook an engine up to! Especially one that converts fuel to raw magical power.

...

It doesn't process fuel by burning it, though.

In the end, it's a sacrifice he would be willing to make... he can always grow more, right? If he doesn't forget how somewhere along the way. ]

Month a half, if I don't try to artificially accelerate the growth. Obviously, that can have an ill effect on the longevity of the components.

[ hadn't that been implied when he said he was also culturing organs...? oh, well. maybe he should have lead with what KIND of engine it was, but frankly, combustion engines like that train's are soooo barbaric... he barely thinks of it as a proper engine at all. ]

It's biological magitech, and it outputs magical power.

I suppose you could fit the train with it so it runs on it. I've never taken apart a train to see all its fine workings, but I do have experience with rigging together that sort of thing.
[ he designed that little factory under dali, after all, and before that built the at-home edition to create the proto-- to create Vivi. ]

We're not able to directly communicate in this state, so I've little idea. We weren't necessarily close before assuming our arrangement.

And handing over the reigns for a time isn't an option.

[ its starting to sink in he might have to share his helltown with her majesty if he does this deal wrong (right?). he puts the phone face down and stares at the ceiling a while after sending that last text. ]
finalbows: (by god does this bitch talk)

[ she died in her daughter's arms on a beach, but hey, not that Kuja noticed. he was too busy flying home to go pop open some Fantasy Champagne, so that sounds more than fine to him. ]

Sounds perfect. [ that would most certainly be... the venue inside the accommodations he'd requested. the question had thrown him off, at first. dealing with all this has him on edge. ]

Oh.
While I know there's not a lot of flowers on the beach, usually... she likes roses quite a bit. Red ones.

[ well. that'll be precisely too late. but...

if he said "give it a week" and was told "hmm how about in five days, maximum, specifically," he'd laugh in that person's face. ]

A week, minimum?

[ long-termly, problem solved.

short-termly...
...

The queen gets an encore, and there's little he can do for it but put his trust... in the people who would care, apparently, if he was replaced in the night by a body-snatcher. ]

That may make things
a little touch and go. I'll try to arrange being available, but by that time I myself am highly likely to be
temporarily indisposed.

I won't be feeling quite myself by that point, if you catch my drift.

[ NO SOUL PRISON PLEASE HE'LL BE FORTHRIGHT FOR ONCE-- ]

alright. as plainly as possible.

My soul has a fatal wound. I had 72 days left when I came here. When I succumb to it, the second soul hosted in my body, Brahne, is left to assume control.

After some time I return, with the wound restored to the state it was in when I arrived. The counter resets. But I am not capable of taking control of my body back from her once she has it. She's stronger than me, in that regard. We will be easy to tell apart by feel, if that's how you tend to do it.

On the 31st my time is once again up.

The actual act of removing her should be easier than typical. It's a quirk of my physiology.

Other than all that. I can't think of anything else that may complicate things.

[personal profile] finalbows 2023-03-27 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ absolutely not, it's his damn house! ]

No

unless there's a way to give a weaker soul a leg up to wrest control of the reigns... sharing is not a long term viable option.

[ if he wants to keep his fabulous magical powers, that is. ]

[ you're gonna make him just... out himself like this... this is the most begrudging text message he will ever painstakingly pluck out with his long clacky nails.

he could just lie and say it's because of the wound, but lying is, perhaps, not the best tack to take with an undertaking this terrifically delicate. ]

it is
less cultivated
than your average human soul. in contrast brahne's is a particularly robust example.

i suspect the difference lays in how much force can be exerted by a muscle that's been exercised less, versus more.

[ he's never passed up an opportunity to take in CULTURE, dammit, don't ask him why none of it worked!

...

none of that probably did much on account of him having his blackened heart set on being the unassailable tyrant-king of the world for all eternity back then. or maybe it was the not forming any genuine emotional bonds with other people. maybe he could have been a tyrant-king with a carefully selected inner circle of best bosom buddies? thoughts for next time. Haha. ]

Apparently, the growth of a soul is largely a matter of mindset, and I have until recently lacked the proper one.

31st is the deadline. I shall attempt to
ah
Take it easy, I suppose? To keep myself in order as long as possible? Though if there were something I knew I could be doing for it, I'd certainly be doing it already.

[ no trying to end the world, then. ]

Last time it happened whilst I was asleep. Morning is like to be best. I shall arrange a suiting venue, and inform you once it's secured.
